Crochet the Sweetheart Mittens

This month I’ve got a something extra special for you. Not only is there a brand new, free crochet pattern, but it’s a special guest design! The Sweetheart Mittens by Carla of Yarn-Over Central feature a fun color work design that showcases some gradient hearts. Cozy, cute, and just in time for Valentines Day! And they’re a part of the Pineapple and Pine brand new Designer Spotlight Crochet-a-Long!

About Designer Spotlight CAL

Designer Spotlight Crochet-a-Long is something that we’re kicking off this year for Pineapple & Pine. We’ve been featuring different crochet designers with our Designer Spotlight posts for nearly a year now. AND we’ve also been hosting Crochet-a-Long’s since last year as well. We decided to combine the two concepts and feature a couple designers for our Crochet-a-longs!

What to Expect

We will be hosting two guest patterns on our blogs for free! You will also have the option to purchase the PDF from the designer if you choose to. For the first two weeks, we will be making one pattern together. Then halfway through the month, we will switch gears and start on the next design. We chose smaller projects so that you will have time to make both if you choose!

And just like all our CAL’s you can share your progress or finished photos in our Facebook group or on Instagram using the hashtag #pineappleandpinecal. We like to do a little drawing from all the photos that get submitted and send a fun participation prize to the winner!

About the Designer

Carla is creator and designer behind Yarn-Over Central. When she’s not working on her designs, she enjoys her job as a nurse and also spending time with her family. She hopes that her unique and one-of-a-kind designs inspire others to make their own creations.

You can find her work on Instagram, Facebook, and Etsy

Carla’s Inspiration

Carla: “I am the warm body behind Yarn-Over Central. I have been crocheting for about 3 years now, although I have always known how to chain and make single crochets. I was inspired to make these mittens after seeing a gray sweater with a purplish-pink heart on it close to Valentine’s Day last year. (The pattern for it can be found here!)  I hope you enjoy making these mittens as much as I enjoyed designing them!”

Purchase the PDF

If you’d like to purchase the printable PDF version of this pattern, you can find it in Carla’s Etsy shop. (For the free version of this pattern, keep scrolling!)

Key/Abbreviations

Sc – single crochet
Blo – back loop only
Sl st – slip stitch
WC – waistcoat stitch
MC – main color
Color A, B, C – colors for the colorwork of the hearts
Cont – continue

Special Techniques

Yarn placement/carrying for heart stitches: Uses a form of intarsia crochet; gray yarn is carried over through heart stitches; yarn for heart stitches is carried across in the opposite direction loosely and stitched over with gray yarn. Using this method provides extra bulk and warmth, and less ends to weave in.

Waistcoast stitch: Insert hook between the two sides of the “V” that is formed from the sc st. Yo, pull yarn through st, LOOSELY. Yo, pull through 2 loops on hook LOOSELY.  This creates a knit-look stitch.

  • Tension: You want your tension to be a bit loose for the waistcoat stitches. Pull UP slightly as in the picture before finishing the stitch.

To change colors: On the stitch before the color change, do not finish the st. You should have 2 loops on your hook. Yo with new color, and pull through the two loops. Crochet with new color for indicated number of stitches.

Row 31-34:

Both Hands: WC st around in MC, Sl st to join, and ch 1 at the end of each row. (29)

Leave tail for cinching shut.

Note: After last row of mittens, weave in ends from the heart stitches BEFORE cinching the top shut. Weaving in ends now is easier with both ends open.

Cuff Ribbing

With 4mm hook: Attach MC with sl st to outer side of mitten where rows start.

Row 1: Sc around, sc2tog on the 10th and 15th sts. Join with a sl st. (29)

Row 2: Ch 11. Sc in 2nd ch from hook and next 9 sts. (10)

Row 3: Sl st in next two sts on mitten body, and ch 1, turn. Sk the two sl sts, sc blo in first ch from hook, and next 9 sts, going through BOTH LOOPS for the last stitch. Ch 1, turn. (10)

Row 4: Sc blo for next 10 sts. Ch 1, turn.

Repeat row 3 & 4 until all the way around the mitten. You should end on the outside of the mitten, not next to the mitten body.

(Note: For a video on this technique, check out this tutorial.)

Pull the ch 1 through the back loop of the cuff that is nearest to you. Cont with sl sts through the back loops for both sides of the cuff. Sl st through the two sl sts next to mitten body. Ch 1 and fasten off.

Thumbhole

With 4mm hook: Attach yarn on inside (palm side) top of thumb opening with MC with a sl st, sc in same st as sl st and next 5 sts. Cont for the bottom of the opening, but use WC st. (14)

Cont WC sts around, joining each row with a sl st, and ch 1 before the start of each row. Complete enough rows to cover thumb.

Last row: WC in first 5 sts, Sc2tog, WC in next 5 sts, sc2tog. Sl st to join. Ch 1. WC st around. Leave long tail and cinch shut.
