How to Crochet a Houndstooth Kite Shawl
Houndstooth print in crochet is a stunning stitch combination that is so easy to do! Throughout my Houndstooth Collection, you will see this stitch worked in rectangles or rounds with amazing results. But, I decided to do a little crochet geometry and came up with a really fun crochet shawl scarf in a triangle shape. And to make it even more interesting, this piece features a kite-shaped design. I think you’ll have a lot of fun creating the Houndstooth Kite Shawl.

You’re also going to need worsted weight yarn and a 5.0mm (H) crochet hook. My favorite hook set from WeCrochet!

What is a Kite Shawl?
Scarves and shawls come in a variety of shapes and styles, one of those being kite shaped. A kite shawl is characterized by an asymmetrical triangle shape. This type of shawl is created by working increases to the point of the triangle and doubling the decreases as you work back down. This creates a wider and more narrow triangle shape with a longer tail on one side.
Kite shawls are often favored for their unique style and ease of wear. Due to the shape of the triangle, they hang shorter on the torso but can be wrapped around the neck or shoulders more easily because of their increased width.
About the Pattern
For the Houndstooth Kite Shawl I use the houndstooth stitch, which is alternating single and double crochet stitches combined with alternating color rows. In addition to this, I did a series of increases and decreases to create this unique shape. The Houndstooth Kite Shawl measure 76″ wide and 20″ tall at the tip of the triangle.
For this pattern, you’ll need worsted weight yarn in two colors and a 5.0mm crochet hook. You can also do this pattern without color changes for a lightly textured fabric instead of houndstooth print. This shawl is also easily adjustable in size by simply adding or subtracting increase rows.

About the Yarn
For this shawl, I used Lion Brand Basic Stitch yarn in the colorways Ivory and Black. I love Basic Stitch yarn for worsted weight projects because it’s soft, resistant to piling, and it comes in a lot of great colors. That leaves you with plenty of potential color combinations to try this shawl out in.
You can also substitute this yarn for any worsted weight yarn. Some close subs for Basic Stitch are Lion Brand Heartland, WeCrochet Mighty Stitch, Caron Simply Soft, and Yarn Bee Soft and Sleek. But I also like WeCrochet Brava Worsted and Lion Brand Color Theory for their color selections and Lion Brand Wool-Ease for warmth and versatility.
You could also experiment with some lighter weight yarns for this shawl. Your triangle will build slower with a lighter yarn but the drape will be amazing! If you opt for lighter yarn, be sure to adjust your hook size to match and measure as you go to get the dimensions you want.

Notes
- This pattern is worked flat in rows and turned at the end of each row.
- Chains at the beginning of the row do not count as stitches.
- This scarf uses two colors and changes color at the end of each row. You will need to carry your unused color along each row and work your stitches around it. When carrying yarn, I recommend checking the tension or your carried yarn at the end of each row by gently stretching the fabric to prevent bunching.
- For the increase portion of this scarf, the increases will be worked on Color B rows only.
- For the decrease portion of this scarf, the decreases will be worked on every row.
- You can customize the size of your scarf by adding or subtracting increase rows. The increase rows will account of 2/3 of the finished scarf measurement.
Special Stitches/Techniques
Single Crochet Two Together (Sc2Tog): Insert your hook into the first stitch and pull up a loop. Insert your hook into the second stitch and pull up a loop. Yarn over and pull through all three loops on your hook.
