Choosing the perfect color for your handmade project is probably one of the most important steps. And what better way to do just that than by looking at this year’s trending colors! I’m a big fan of the Spring/Summer 2022 colors so far, so I decided to see what yarns I could find to match. I’m going to be sharing some of this years bold and beautiful color trends AND matching yarn in some of my favorite brands. Hopefully you’ll get some color inspiration for your next crochet project!

What is the Pantone Color of the Year?
First of all, I’d be remiss if I wrote all about color trends for the year didn’t start with what this year’s Pantone Color of the Year was. Pantone, as a company, is all about color and spans several industries in their work. Each year Pantone chooses a color that they predict will trend in consumer products for that year. The Pantone Color of the Year for 2022 is Very Peri. Very Peri is a rich periwinkle blue.

Where does the Color Inspiration Come From?
Well, if you’ve seen The Devil Wears Prada, you probably already know the answer to this one. Many of the color palettes we see online and in stores trickle down from high fashion runways. I did some scanning of fashion weeks reviews, Pinterest, and fashion blogs to get a good feel for what everyone was loving this year. And this year’s color favorites are so much fun!
How to Use Color Trends in Handmade Projects
Now you might be wondering the best way to incorporate these colors into your handmade project queue. Of course, this is totally personal preference, but based on the colors I’m sharing, I’m going to give you my “expert opinion” on where I’d use them.
Most of the color compilations that I’ve seen focus on a few classic neutrals and lots of saturated, bold colors. To me, this is the best of both worlds for handmade items.
For your longer term projects that you’d like to be wardrobe or home staples, you can use those classic neutral colors. These colors are never going out of style. They might not be the color of the year, but they’re going to give your handmade wardrobe and home the depth you need on a day-to-day basis.
For your bright, bold colors, I’d opt for something a little quicker. Accessories are great for this! Think bags/clutches, table decor or even wraps. That’s not to say you shouldn’t make any bold colored handmade clothes or blankets. I love a good statement piece. In fact, I’d say pick a piece and go for it! Will it be a popular color again next year? Maybe, maybe not. But color trends tend to cycle back around every few years, so don’t let vibrant color scare you.

What Yarns I’m Sharing
There are so many great yarn options out there! My goal with this article is really to point you in the direction of particular yarn colors that match this seasons color trends. So while I can’t possibly link to every yarn company or box store out there, I’m going to share two of my favorite brands and yarns to work with: Lion Brand and WeCrochet. If you like to shop elsewhere, then hopefully I’ve given you a nudge in the direction you want to go.
I’m going to try to break them down by color trend and by yarn fiber, so hopefully you’ll find the color you want for the season that you’re looking for. The yarn will be listed with a fiber description and weight with each one to help you find one that works for you project a little easier. Color Palettes
This year’s spring and summer color trends seemed to stick with a general color palette. However, the shades vary slightly. One fashion blogger referred to the colors as Bold vs Sun-Bleached. I thought this was such a good description of the two spring palettes. And yet, I loved them both, so I’m going to find you some yarn for each!
